Remote first? We’ve been doing that from the beginning!

Remote first? We’ve been doing that from the beginning!

Historically, the most popular corporate perspective has been that the only place you can get work done is in an office that is provided by your employer. 2020 blew this perspective out of the water. While for some jobs, in-office work might be a logistical requirement, there are many where that simply isn’t the case. When we start looking at the IT industry especially; it lends itself very well to thriving in a remote working environment.

In fact, Hoodoo was started with the mentality of being remote-first. When the 2020 pandemic hit and the world suddenly shut down, Hoodoo was able to continue operations as usual with no disruption to our workflow. We were already prepared for the shutdown caused by the pandemic because of our remote-first approach, and we even
showed some of our customers how to create a successful remote working model for their own organizations.

With Great Remoteness Comes Great... Flexibility

While Hoodoo maintains our office at our headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah, employees are not required to show up and “work a shift” in the office. Instead, working remotely is expected and encouraged. As part of the employee welcome package, Hoodoo employees will receive a laptop, backpack, hoodie, and tumbler. Additionally, Hoodoo Digital provides new employees $1000 to create their own custom home-office setup. This could include a monitor, keyboard, mouse, desk, chair, or any other item that an employee may need for their ideal at-home setup. As Andy Wakefield, Hoodoo Co-founder explained, it allows for unprecedented flexibility for our workforce.  “We want to make sure that all of our employees have a state-of-the-art work center in their homes to be able to match the kind of world-class work that they produce for our customers. On top of that, we want to provide them with the type of technology that would allow them to have the flexibility to go wherever they want to in order to get that work done,” he said.

What Andy describes is known throughout the industry as the “digital nomad,” and it is a reality for many Hoodoo employees. Just last year, one of our employees planned an extended trip to another part of the country. In addition to packing what he would need for his vacation, he brought along his laptop. This allowed him to explore the area far longer than a typical vacation would allow.  The first week, he worked remotely during the day, and in the evening, he was free to experience what the local nightlife had to offer. The second week was taken as a vacation, leaving the laptop shut so he could disconnect and personally recharge.

This isn’t just encouraged at Hoodoo, it is incentivized with a one-time yearly bonus for any employee who chooses to take extended vacations. For many, this is one of the great benefits of Hoodoo’s remote work and vacation policies. It makes trips to see extended family much more manageable, it allows for lengthy visits to new cities, states, and countries, and the scramble to fit everything into a single vacation turns into a non-issue. Our employees are not locked into a regimented in-office policy that polices where they work.

I personally have taken advantage of Hoodoo’s remote policy to plan trips to family members that live out of state, as these trips allowed me to spend more time with family while also getting my work done. And then I was in a position to take day trips or longer vacations with them. The flexibility and trust available to our employees in these situations is standard for everyone - not just upper management.

If you are ready to start thinking “remote first”, you should consider a position with Hoodoo. Check out a list of all of our current job openings. Are you looking to join a team that values the opportunity for employees to work remotely?
